SUNNY used to play the violin, and at some point started playing together with MARI, who plays piano. Being neighbors with KEL and HERO, SUNNY and MARI quickly became friends with them. Not too long after, they met AUBREY and BASIL, and became close friends. BASIL's photo album shows the group being close friends; going to school together, celebrating birthdays and building a treehouse. SUNNY and MARI started playing together to practice for an upcoming duet recital.
One day, SUNNY became frustrated with practicing and he throws his violin down his staircase. MARI sees this and begins yelling at him. When she blocked his path, he pushed her down the staircase and she lands on top of his violin. SUNNY panics when she doesn't answer, and drags her body to bed so she can "rest." When she still won't answer, he panics as he doesn't think people will believe it was an accident. BASIL helps him cover it up and they hang her in the backyard.
At some point following MARI's death, SUNNY dropped out from school and began visiting WHITE SPACE through a black-and-white doppelgänger called OMORI. After OMORI took over SUNNY's dreams, he began to cut himself off from the outside world and lost contact with his friends.

More about Sunny is revealed through his alter ego known as Omori. Omori was created as a manifestation of Sunny's guilt with his involvement over his sister's death. With Omori, Sunny explored a place called White Space where he visited over the four years of his life after Mari's death. In White Space, he went on adventures with younger versions of his friends and had picnics with his sister who was still alive and took care of them. That is until he is reminded of what happened to Mari in White Space from Basil. Basil goes missing afterward which kicked off the events of the game. Since Sunny is essentially in control of White Space itself, Sunny subconsciously got rid of Basil so he didn't have to remember anymore. He even derailed the adventure multiple times to put off finding Basil any longer. It is through this that it can be said that Sunny does not like confronting his problems, going so far as to create an entire false reality where everything is perfect just to avoid it.
In White Space, Sunny and his alter ego have developed some violent tendencies. Omori uses a knife to fight which is something that Sunny has carried over into his real life. When confronting Aubrey, he ends up stabbing her due to the fact that he couldn't distinguish between the real world and White Space. His violent tendencies also take the form of holding grudges. When Omori arrives in the place known as Black Space, Basil is often shown being brutally killed. Sunny grew to secretly hate Basil due to his involvement in covering up Mari's death by hanging her in the backyard. Sunny can also be quite selfish, or at least ignorant of most people's feelings due to the fact that he never told anyone that he was going to be moving away. Not even Basil who had the worse reaction out of anyone once he found out.
Self-hate and guilt is something that Sunny suffers from the most. He often blames himself for things that may be out of his control. During his fight with his other self, Omori talks about how it is his fault that everyone's lives got ruined after he accidentally pushed Mari down the stairs. Sunny is heavily implied to be suicidal through some of the different imagery through the game. To leave White Space, Omori usually has to stab himself in the stomach to wake up. There is also multiple endings in the game that end with Sunny killing himself. But, while Sunny is still struggling with these traits, he is on the path to improvement after his battle with Omori.
